THINK TWICE BEFORE INVESTING IN A HYBRIDISED (EXOTIC) YORKIE

The character # is an indication that there have already been papers written or investigation

and laboratory tests with regard to this matter.

We will only focus on the explosion of hybridised Yorkie breeding in South Africa, also referred to as Exotic Yorkies.

The Merle gene in exotic Yorkies results in fainter/diluted background coat colour or fully-coloured patches of various sizes #.  In addition to coat changes, the mutation also modifies the eye colour to blue or heterochromatic, with the nose and/or paws to appear pink spotted on light in colour, similar to an albino #.  This mutation is inherited in an autosomal semi-dominant manner in the canine chromosome 10 #. These Merle phenotypes can occur as the double-merle, hidden merles, cryptic merle, and harlequin, also referred to as merlequin #.  From these, the double-merle mutation is the most extreme (which modifies eye colour with a lighter background coat) #.  The detriment of this mutations results in severe congenital sensory neural deafness # or ocular dysgenesis (conditions such as microphthalmos, colobomas and iris hypoplasia) #.

Now that we have gone through the science, here is a more understandable explanation. Although this mutation can occur in many dog breeds (over 80), henceforth we will only refer to Yorkies.

Simply put, this mutation makes it more likely for Yorkies to be of varying degrees of blindness, deafness and/or both.  This mutation is highly likely to occur through crossbreeding and inbreeding in Yorkshire Terriers who carry the Merle mutation #, with the continuation of this breeding practise to spread this gene in Yorkies.

Extreme Yorkie merle cases typically have blues eyes or one blue and one brown eye which are known to possess a range of hearing and seeing defects.  Exotic Yorkies with two copies of any of the size variants consistent with merle are called double merles and often can have an all-white coat, (these are not white Yorkies). Some kennel clubs have officially prohibited merle to merle mating as there is a more than 25% chance of producing the double merle genotype and phenotype #. Double merle mating with another merle has more than a 75% chance of happening #.

Furthermore, the remaining strategies of most reputable breeders are to not breed affected dogs that carry the merle gene at all #.  Overall, it is recommended for breeders to avoid breeding merle phenotypes for the animal wellbeing and avoiding creating dogs with special needs.

Unfortunately there is no law in South Africa that prohibits people from breeding out of breed standards, but you can make a difference.  It is with a heartfelt urge to YOU to do your homework before investing and encouraging breeders to breed these special needs exotic dogs.  If there is no demand for these dogs you will be contributing to a better society where there is already a huge amount of dogs that are put in shelters or euthanized.

Because of the complexities of merle inheritance and potential health concerns we can assure you that Traditional Yorkshire Terriers and Biewer Terriers are not prone to being Merle carriers at all.   The Biewer Terrier Club of South Africa have all our true Biewer Terrier breeding dogs DNA profiled with Dr. Cindy Harper at the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory at Onderstepoort.

When you intend to purchase a Biewer Terrier and it is also referred to as Biewer Yorkie you ought to investigate the authenticity of the dog.  Breeders might even lure you into thinking you are buying a true Biewer Terrier. If you have any doubts you ought to inquire about a DNA certificate that the parent Biewer Terriers are taken into the Brewer Terrier database exclusively held at the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory at Onderstepoort.

Please help us fight this injustice that is being done to our Traditional Yorkies and Authentic Biewer Terriers.

Thank you.

If you are not allowed on a Biewer terrier Breeder's property to inspect the conditions and upbringing of your new Biewer puppy do not even consider purchasing a puppy from such a breeder.   At the BTCSA our breeding dogs and Biewer puppies are part of our families and live with us in our homes NOT caged.  You are welcome in our Biewer Terrier homes!

Our breeders will not sell you a sick Biewer puppy.

We stand united to preserve and protect the Biewer, Biewer Terriers .development, health, and quality of the Biewer Terrier and Biewer terrier puppies. The BTCSA breeders are dedicated to breeding purely authentic Biewer Terriers.

The Biewer Terrier Club is a non-profit organization with membership open to breeders of Biewer Terriers. The founder members of the BTC  have between them a century of experience and are knowledgeable about the health and breeding issues associated with breeding. This experience will be invaluable in the establishment and breeding of the Biewer Terrier by educating the members on the standard and seeing to the health of the Biewer Terrier.

The first historical SA bred Biewer Terrier Show was held on the 16th of May 2010.

Our mission is to establish the Biewer Terrier in South Africa, to preserve and protect the quality of the breed its health, heritage, and future.

The Committee and members of the Biewer Terrier Club of South Africa selected for the name Biewer Terrier, as being the most rational name for the Biewer breed.   And although we take pleasure in the expression 'a la Pom Pon' named by Margot Eskins, we took note that it may have not been a veritable expression for the breed.

The BTC act and represent our members and their dogs with the very best of intention.

It has been scientifically proven that Biewer Terriers are not white Yorkies.  In order to preserve the Biewer Terrier's unique characteristics, and behavioral differences we need to keep the breeding sound.  If you keep crossing Biewers back to Yorkshire Terriers, you are going to lose these unique characteristics, and end up with something more like a Yorkshire Terrier or exotic designer dog but yet will never quite be a Yorkshire Terrier. We do not recognize a Biewer Terrier as a colour variation for the Parti Yorkshire Terrier. We only advocate Biewer to Biewer breeding.

Whilst we always serve to maintain only the best associations with other clubs, we emphasize, we are mindful to always act without prejudice or discrimination.

From time to time we do have Biewer Terriers priced less than the recommended prices,

The first trace to the meaning of the word genealogy is in the foundation "gene," as in "passed on through the genes." Add to that the suffix -logy, which means "study," and you get genealogy, the study of an origin. Knowing the genealogy is indispensable for breeders and persons who take a real interest in their pets or breeding animal’s heritage.   It has factual advantages, especially when it comes to medical and genetic history.

So what does it mean when breeders talk about their bloodlines and ancestor bloodlines?

This depends on the morality of a breeder who shows, saying that their dogs have champion lines usually means that the puppy's parents and or grandparents and even great grandparents, were show dogs and the breeder is trying hard to reproduce good quality dogs that look the way the breed according to the breed standard is supposed to by breeding dogs that won champion titles. But remember there are breeders who could not be bothered to show, that breed potential champions time after time.   Use your own judgment here and follow the track record of such a breeder.

Watch out for the breeder who is just trying to enhance the sales price of puppies by saying that they breed the best bloodlines, champion bloodlines, or imported champion bloodlines, it might mean one ancestor a couple of generations back has a winner title.

When do you get a Champion?   When winning the correct number of points. After defeating other animals of the same breed, under different judges.  This will earn a champion or best in show title.
